In a significant move just ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have jointly written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urgently calling for an independent and comprehensive investigation into the financial affairs of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Their letter, dated July 18, 2026, alleges a massive "theft of thousands of crores" from the donations intended for the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Temple, sparking widespread concern among devotees.
The leaders highlighted that countless devotees, who contributed their hard-earned money with immense faith and trust, now feel profoundly betrayed by these alleged financial irregularities. They underscored that the Trust was established under the Prime Minister's instructions, following a Supreme Court directive, yet its members were entirely selected by the government and are reportedly affiliated with organizations like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Kharge and Gandhi did not mince words, stating that the Prime Minister's "silence now in the face of such a crime is unacceptable." They emphasized that it is the Prime Prime Minister's duty to ensure accountability and restitution for the alleged mismanagement of public donations. The Congress leaders specifically urged PM Modi to order a thorough investigation into all offerings, including cash, gold, and silver, and to make the findings and the Trust's accounts public. This, they argue, would ensure transparency and allow every devotee to understand how their sacred contributions have been utilized.
This joint letter is seen as a strategic move by the Opposition to set the stage for what is expected to be a stormy Monsoon session, bringing the sensitive issue of the Ram Temple's finances into national debate.
