Mamata Banerjee Takes Dig at Amit Shah During ED Investigation Standoff in Kolkata

West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the TMC supremo, went so far as to personally interfere in an official Enforcement Directorate investigation, a strange yet believable turn of events.

Chief Minister rushed to the scene herself amid ongoing ED raids at I-PAC Chief Pratik Jain's Kolkata home, and a high-voltage drama soon ensued. In yet another instance of unparliamentary behavior, Banerjee called Union Home Minister Amit Shah a "nasty, naughty" home minister and accused the ED of "collecting" party documents and obtaining the party's strategy, hard drives, candidates' list, and "party plan." She also questioned whether it was the agency's responsibility to do so.

‘The nasty, naughty home minister who cannot protect the country is taking away all my party documents’, alleged Banerjee, speaking using a microphone. ‘If I raid the BJP party office, what will be the result?’ she further asked.

She went on to accuse the BJP of "deleting" West Bengal's names through the SIR process, and she claimed that "they have already attacked my IT office, I am going there also" while holding a folder that she had taken from Pratik Jain, the chief of the I-PAC and the head of the TMC IT Cell.

Jain, the chief of the TMC IT Cell, co-founded I-PAC, or the Indian Political Action Committee, a political consulting firm. The ED is looking into this company in connection with a money laundering case. Mamata Banerjee hurried to the locations of the ED raids at the IPAC office and Jain's home, where she promptly took possession of some files that she described as "important party documents."

Apart from the IPAC office and Jain’s home, eight other locations were raided starting at 7 AM on Thursday. Central paramilitary forces were present during the raids.

It is interesting that, while calling the Union Home Minister "naughty” and labeling the ED raids as “politically motivated,” CM Mamata Banerjee personally rushed to the scene despite being the chief minister of West Bengal.

At this point, many are asking why a chief minister would go to sites being raided in an ongoing legal investigation. Instead of helping the investigation proceed smoothly through proper cooperation, she seemed to disrupt it and, along with the state police, removed potential evidence from the area. CM Banerjee's actions were not only strange but also against the law. Consequently, the Enforcement Directorate acted quickly, filing a plea with the Bengal High Court against this unlawful interference in the agency's legal process.
