Rembrandt Rediscovered: 1633 Vision of Zacharias Authenticated at Rijksmuseum
A long-lost Rembrandt from 1633 is authenticated after decades in private hands and set to go on display in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.
A long-lost Rembrandt painting from 1633 has been authenticated after decades in private hands. Vision of Zacharias in the Temple was painted when the artist was about 27, and it vanished from public view after being sold in 1961.
The work resurfaced when its owners brought it to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for testing, prompting a painstaking two-year examination. The museum’s team compared materials, technique, and the layering of paint with Rembrandt’s known works from the early period, looking for telltale signs of timing and method.
The painting’s signature is original, and the wooden panel dates from the correct period. Materials analysis, stylistic and thematic similarities, and the adjustments Rembrandt is known to have made all support the conclusion that this is indeed a genuine work from his youth.
Experts describe the piece as bearing all the hallmarks of Rembrandt at the peak of his early career. While some of his portraits were produced in larger numbers, this painting stands out for its intensity and craftsmanship, suggesting the artist dedicated real soul to the work. The Rijksmuseum notes that the validation process involved careful, rigorous study and comparison with other early pieces in Rembrandt’s oeuvre.
The painting will go on display this week at the Rijksmuseum, marking a major addition to Amsterdam’s cultural landscape and a renewed chapter in the story of one of the Dutch master’s earliest successes.
