A Hindu man, 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a factory worker in Mymensingh city, was lynched by a mob late Thursday after alleged blasphemy. He was beaten, hanged from a tree, and his body was set on fire, authorities said. The incident briefly halted traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway as police moved in to restore order.
The killing occurred in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district, and investigators recovered Das’s body and sent it to the Mymensingh Medical College morgue for autopsy. Video footage of the attack circulated on social media, amplifying tensions in the area and drawing urgent attention to safety for religious minorities amid mounting unrest.
The Bangladesh interim government condemned the lynching, stating there is no space for violence, intimidation, or hatred, and promised that the perpetrators will not be spared. The government also urged citizens to honor Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent July Uprising leader who was shot six days earlier in Dhaka, by rejecting violence and hatred.
The incident sits within a backdrop of broader unrest in the country, including protests after the death of a student leader and attacks on media institutions, raising concerns about minority safety and press freedom. As elections approach, authorities say the rule of law and justice for all communities must prevail, and that violence against any group will be condemned and addressed decisively.
