Modi targets Congress over Assam migrants, pledges to protect tea workers
PM Modi accuses Congress of settling Bangladeshi migrants in Assam and vows to safeguard land rights for tea plantation workers while inaugurating a ₹10,601-crore plant.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi repeated his attack on Congress, accusing it of illegally settling Bangladeshi migrants in Assam and protecting them. While addressing a crowd in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Sunday, he linked the migrants to electoral calculations and noted that Assam’s identity is at stake.
He also criticised the Congress for denying land rights to Assam’s tea plantation workers, arguing that neglect of indigenous communities fuels a vote-bank agenda and weakens local rights protections.
In a related move, Modi laid the foundation stone for a ₹10,601-crore brownfield ammonia-urea plant in Namrup, with a target to commission the unit by 2030, signaling a push to boost Assam’s manufacturing and jobs.
The Prime Minister claimed Congress would destabilize Assam to fortify its vote-bank, and urged people to oppose appeasement and protect Assam’s identity. He pledged that the BJP would stand with indigenous communities.
The remarks come ahead of Assembly elections due in less than six months, with migration and land rights shaping a heated political narrative in the state.
