The CPCB data showed an AQI of 150, bringing relief to residents who had endured days of haze and swelling pollution levels. The change was noticeable for people stepping out, with crisper air and better visibility marking the shift.
The rebound in air quality followed a dramatic dip from the day before. A 24-hour average of around 282 the previous day gave way to a 4 pm reading near 192, and readings continued to ease into the mid-160s by night as strong winds—around 18-20 km/h—blew away pollutants. In short order, the city moved from an unhealthy to a moderate day, the first such day since late last year.
Experts point to the winter rain and persistent winds as the main drivers of this improvement. The rain washed away dust particles and aerosols, while gusty winds carried pollutants away from the city. However, forecasters warn that this relief could be short-lived. The Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) projected the air quality to deteriorate again in the days ahead, with the outlook ranging from poor to very poor over the next six days. Residents are urged to stay updated on daily AQI readings and adjust outdoor activities accordingly.
The temperature cooled as a result of the rain and cloud cover, adding to the sensation of a fresh spell in the air.
