NYC Assemblyman Mamdani Slams RSS Chief's Madison Square Event

New York City Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has publicly voiced strong opposition to the upcoming event featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Bhagwat is scheduled to address approximately 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora on August 29, as part of the RSS's global outreach program for its centenary year.

Mamdani, speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, stated,

I don't support the rally, but I don't know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event.

He articulated his vision of India as a "pluralistic society, of a secular republic that believed in the belonging of each and every person who was from India," a vision he feels is at odds with the RSS's ideology.

His stance is echoed by various organizations that have come together under the banner "No Platform for Hate" to protest the event. This coalition includes representatives from Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Dalit, and other interfaith groups, all expressing their concerns about providing a platform for Bhagwat's speech. The planned protest highlights significant community division and debate surrounding the event.
