UK could hit 25C this week as April warms up
Forecasters expect the warmest April in years, with mid-20s across much of the UK before a cooldown on Thursday.
The UK is bracing for a spell of unusually warm weather this week, with forecasters predicting the warmest April in years. Temperatures could soar into the mid-20s across much of England before a cooler spell arrives later in the week, the kind of contrast that has people talking as winter fades. It marks a striking shift from the Easter weekend storms and the usual early-April chill, and the last time we saw this kind of warmth this early in the year was in 2020 when Cornwall hit 26C.
In the capital, London, the thermometer could reach about 25C by 5pm on Wednesday, with Reading at 24C, Cambridge at 23C, and Southampton around 22C as the southwest enjoys more sunshine. Down the coast and inland, the warmth spreads further north too, with Manchester forecast to hit 20C and Newcastle around 19C on certain days.
Tuesday is expected to be mostly dry and sunny, though breeze from the sea will make it windier along the coasts. Some showers could pop up in western Wales and the northwest of Scotland in the afternoon, but the overall trend is a stretch of pleasant, bright weather for much of the country.
But the warm spell won’t last. Forecasters warn of a “big change” Thursday as temperatures dip back to around 10C–13C, with the south likely to hover near that level into the weekend. The shift is largely driven by wind direction—the warm southerly flow that has pushed readings up will ease, allowing more typical April conditions to return.
All of this underscores how quickly the weather can swing this time of year: a few days of sun and optimism, followed by a more tempered end to the week. While the next couple of days bring mid-20s for many, residents are advised to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts and stay prepared for a dip as Thursday approaches.
