Delhi IGI ATC glitch triggers massive flight delays
A malfunction in the AMSS at Delhi's IGIA disrupts ATC data, forcing manual planning and delaying hundreds of flights as authorities race to restore the system.
Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi were disrupted Friday morning after a malfunction in the Automatic Message Switching System, a key feed for Air Traffic Control data. The AMSS glitch slowed the ATC data stream, forcing controllers to process flight plans manually and slowing operations at one of the world's busiest airports, which handles around 60 aircraft movements per hour and roughly 1,500 arrivals and departures daily.
By Thursday evening, the issue had triggered at least 25 delays, and flight-tracking data shows more than 60 departures affected as of Friday morning. Officials said more than 150 departures were delayed on Friday, with the overall disruption affecting hundreds of flights. The Airports Authority of India confirmed the AMSS malfunction and said controllers would manually compile flight plans while the system was restored. Flightradar24 data cited 513 delays on Thursday and 171 delays since morning on Friday, with departures piling up earlier than arrivals, underscoring the scale of disruption at IGIA.
Delays have ripple effects across passengers, airlines, and connecting flights. Passengers are urged to check with their airline for status updates, and airport officials said the teams are working to restore the AMSS and re-enable automatic flight-plan feeding to the Auto Track System. The IGIA handles more than 60 movements per hour, underscoring how quickly an IT glitch can cascade into congestion. Authorities asked for patience as restoration work continues.
