Indian couple and their toddler were abducted in Benghazi, Libya, en route to Portugal, with a ₹2 crore ransom demanded as authorities monitor the case.
An Indian couple and their three-year-old daughter were kidnapped in Libya while traveling to migrate to Portugal, with kidnappers demanding a ransom of ₹2 crore. The family, from Badalpura village in Mehsana district, Gujarat, was traveling with a Portugal-based agent when the abduction occurred in Benghazi. The couple’s brother reportedly lives in Portugal, and the family hoped to settle there.
Their journey began on November 29, when they flew from Ahmedabad to Dubai. From Dubai they moved on to Libya, where the abduction happened before they could reach their intended destination. The agent who helped organize their travel is not Indian, and the kidnapping appears to involve international travel networks connected to Portugal.
After the incident, the kidnappers contacted relatives in Mehsana and demanded a ransom of ₹2 crore. The family’s relatives approached the Mehsana collector for assistance as authorities and the Ministry of External Affairs were informed about the case. Local officials said the government is coordinating with the MEA to pursue a resolution, while the identity of the kidnappers and the status of the hostages remain unclear and under investigation.
Authorities emphasized that the agents involved in arranging the trip are not Indian, and they are continuing inquiries to determine who is behind the kidnapping and how to ensure the family’s safe return. The case has drawn attention to risks faced by individuals seeking to migrate through international channels and the importance of robust consular and law-enforcement support in such crises.
