India unlocks free access to Gemini Pro, ChatGPT Go, and Perplexity
Major AI players roll out free 12-18 month plans for Indian users—Gemini Pro, ChatGPT Go, and Perplexity Pro, widening nationwide AI access.
In a bold push to widen AI adoption, Google, OpenAI, and partners are making their premium tools free for Indian users. Gemini Pro will be free for 18 months via Google and Jio; Airtel customers get a 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription at no cost; OpenAI is offering ChatGPT Go free for 12 months to eligible Indians.
Eligibility requires you to be physically located in India, new to ChatGPT or a current free user or existing ChatGPT Go subscriber with an eligible account in good standing. If subscribing on Android through Google Play, you must have your account location set to India. You'll need a payment method on file but won't be charged until the end of the 12-month period. No promo code is needed, and you can redeem the promotion only once per account.
After the period ends, the service will automatically bill your method at the current rate unless you cancel ahead of time. If you cancel, you won't be able to redeem again. This move comes amid a pivot in the AI race, with Gemini's traffic share rising and OpenAI facing strong competition as Gemini's user base has surged to over 650 million monthly active users.
Analysts say the Indian market could become a proving ground for affordable AI tools, with potential ripple effects on startups and consumer tech as more people gain access to advanced assistants.
