Ayush Mhatre Retired Out as CSK Rally to Beat DC in IPL
Ayush Mhatre, retired out in the 18th over after a 59 off 36, helps CSK post 212/2 with Shivam Dube finishing strong to defeat Delhi Capitals by 23 runs.
Chennai Super Kings pulled off a tactical move in IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals when Ayush Mhatre was retired out in the 18th over. At 175/2 and needing a late burst, CSK turned to Shivam Dube, and the move paid off as the innings finished at 212/2.
Mhatre, who scored 59 off 36, had found it hard to accelerate against Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan. He explained after the match that he was feeling the pressure to accelerate and that the team needed big shots, so the plan was to retire him and let Shivam Dube finish the innings.
Earlier, Mhatre and Sanju Samson had stitched 113 for the second wicket before the retirement, a stand Samson called very important and characterized by composure.
Samson also praised Mhatre's calm, noting that his composure showed the character he has.
CSK then bowled Delhi Capitals out for 189 to win by 23 runs.
With the win, CSK ended a six-match home losing run and sit ninth with one win and three losses, while DC remain fourth with two wins and two losses.
