Delhi is engulfed in a wave of protests as two major marches from India Gate to Jantar Mantar took place today, marking the third consecutive day of demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The protests primarily target alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding the CEC's resignation.
Despite police denying permission for the rallies, a significant turnout was observed. Security has been heavily tightened across the capital, with Delhi Police deploying approximately 5,000 personnel, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other paramilitary units, to manage the situation.
The 'Citizens' March', led by the All India Students' Association (AISA), commenced at 3 pm, with a focus not only on the CEC's resignation but also on pressing women's safety concerns. This was followed by an Indian Youth Congress march along the same route at 5 pm. However, the day was marred by reports of alleged police brutality and misconduct.
AISA, through social media, claimed that Delhi Police 'manhandled, assaulted & groped female students & journalists' during the protests.
Prominent figures, including AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj and AISA national president Neha Bora, were reportedly detained. AISA further alleged that Neha Bora was detained in an 'unauthorised vehicle' and a male police officer 'manhandled' and 'abused' her.
The Press Club of India expressed 'shock' over the alleged harassment of women journalists. Political leaders were quick to condemn the actions. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal voiced his shock over Saurabh Bharadwaj's detention, while Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi questioned PM Modi and Amit Shah.
CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat also expressed strong disapproval of the alleged police conduct. Journalists also staged a protest outside the Parliament Street police station, demanding an FIR against ACP Vivek Bhagat in light of the harassment allegations.
The CJP (Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms) slammed Amit Shah for deploying 'excess' force, with its members protesting outside the police station and expressing intent to speak with alleged victims.
The protests underscore deep-seated discontent over electoral transparency and police accountability, especially concerning the treatment of protestors and media personnel.
As the demonstrations continue, the calls for justice and accountability are growing louder across the capital.
