In a significant operation aimed at curbing illegal activities, the Delhi Police have successfully seized a massive consignment of prohibited firecrackers weighing 683 kg in Rohini. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the illicit storage and transportation of these dangerous items, officials confirmed on Thursday.
This bust is a crucial step towards ensuring public safety and maintaining environmental regulations, especially with the ongoing concerns around air quality.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Ravi, 35, a resident of Vijay Vihar Phase-II, and Ram Kumar, 47, along with Chand, 49, both hailing from Avantika in Sector 1, Rohini. Their apprehension followed a targeted raid conducted at a godown located in Budh Vihar. According to police reports, the three men were caught red-handed in the act of loading the banned firecrackers into a car and a scooter, presumably for distribution or sale.
During the raid, authorities confiscated the substantial quantity of firecrackers directly from the godown.
Additionally, the two vehicles, a car and a scooter, which were allegedly being used to transport the illicit goods, were also seized by the police. The estimated value of the seized firecrackers is approximately ₹35 lakh, highlighting the scale of the illegal operation they were running.
A case has been promptly registered at the Budh Vihar police station. The charges against the accused include relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, a comprehensive criminal code, and Section 9(B) of the Explosives Act, which specifically deals with the illegal handling and storage of explosive materials. This legal action underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating violations related to prohibited items.
Further investigation is currently underway to delve deeper into the matter.
The police are working diligently to ascertain the original source of these prohibited firecrackers. Their efforts also extend to identifying any other individuals or networks that might be involved in the storage, supply, and broader transportation chain of such dangerous goods within the city.
This ongoing probe aims to dismantle the entire illegal operation and prevent future incidents.
