India has marked a significant leap in indigenous aero-engine technology with the successful development of its first expendable turbojet engine. Designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), this 350 kg thrust class engine is set to revolutionize the nation's defense capabilities.
This groundbreaking development is crucial for modern warfare, as these powerplants are essential for various platforms, including cruise missiles and target drones. With the rise of jet-powered loitering munitions, the applications for such engines are expected to expand dramatically. While similar engines have powered international cruise missiles like the US Tomahawk, India's success significantly bolsters its strategic autonomy and reduces reliance on foreign imports for critical defense components.
The GTRE-developed engine, while less powerful than the 450kg thrust-class Small Turbofan Engine (STFE) designed for the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM), still represents a major advancement. Its introduction follows closely on the heels of the Army's recent acquisition of 106 jet-powered Peacekeeper (Agniveg) loitering munitions from domestic firm SMPP.
The Agniveg, with its impressive speed of up to 450kmph, is a stark contrast to drones like the Shahed or Geran series, which operate at speeds below 200kmph. These advanced jet-powered drones are designed for deep territorial engagement, boasting a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of less than five meters. Furthermore, they are built to withstand and operate effectively in jammed and spoofed environments, targeting critical infrastructure such as logistics hubs, fuel depots, and ammunition storage facilities. This indigenous engine will further empower such cutting-edge defense systems, enhancing India's prowess in non-contact kinetic warfare.
