Anak Krakatau Erupts! 🌋 Jakarta Airport Flights Halted, Thousands Stranded

Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano roared to life early Sunday morning, forcing the temporary suspension of all flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Volcanic ash, a common byproduct of such eruptions, drifted across significant parts of western Indonesia, including the capital and Lampung province on the southern tip of Sumatra island.

The Indonesian Geological Agency reported that the volcanic island, nestled in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, had shown increased activity since Friday. The dramatic eruption occurred at 3:53 AM on Sunday, lasting for 30 seconds, with the agency's closed-circuit cameras capturing images of lava flares.

Despite the fiery display and widespread ash, authorities have confirmed no casualties and have not issued any evacuation orders, noting that the nearest settlement is more than 16 kilometers away. However, residents and tourists are strongly advised to maintain a distance of at least 3 kilometers from the volcano's active crater. The impact on air travel was immediate and significant.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the country's busiest hub, halted flight operations from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM.

This closure affected an estimated 209 flight movements and approximately 22,800 passengers on Sunday. Passengers faced frustrating delays, with many seeking refunds or attempting to reclaim checked baggage as departure boards listed a growing number of canceled flights.

Both domestic routes, such as the busy connection to Makassar in South Sulawesi, and international flights to destinations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Amsterdam, experienced disruptions. Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation is closely monitoring the situation, coordinating with airlines, airport operators, air navigation services, and the meteorology agency to manage the fallout.

Authorities are working to minimize further inconvenience while prioritizing safety.

This recent eruption serves as a stark reminder of the volcano's potent power, which famously caused a devastating tsunami in 2018, claiming at least 430 lives in Sumatra and Java.
