In a significant development concerning the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur, a specialized team led by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended two individuals suspected of involvement in the brutal killing of six Naga civilians. The arrests occurred on Friday morning, July 10, 2026, in the Leilon Vaiphei area of Manipur's Kangpokpi district.
The operation, executed by a joint force comprising Manipur Police, NIA, and CRPF, targeted a woman identified as Ayingbi and another person named Pradip. Both were taken into custody from a Kuki-Zo village following credible intelligence. Authorities believe they were directly involved in the May 13 killings of the six Naga individuals.
The bodies of the Naga civilians were tragically discovered on June 10 in the vicinity of Leilon Vaiphei village. This discovery sparked widespread outrage and protests across the region, with both Naga and Meitei communities demanding swift justice for the victims. These demonstrations included the blocking of major routes leading to Kangpokpi district, which in turn led to a severe escalation in prices of essential commodities in the Kuki-Zo majority areas.
The incident also brought the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) into the spotlight. Initially, KZC chairman Henlienthang Thanglet publicly apologized, admitting that "the Kuki-Zo people made a grave mistake in killing the six Naga civilians" and attributing the act to emotion. He strongly condemned the act and offered an apology on behalf of his community.
However, a day later, the KZC issued a clarification, stating that portions of Thanglet's remarks had been "misconstrued as an admission of responsibility by the Kuki-Zo community." The council emphasized that his expression of sorrow was made purely out of humanity, compassion, and moral responsibility, and was not intended to assign collective guilt. Meanwhile, the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) has appealed to President Droupadi Murmu, urging intervention for justice for the victims and robust measures to restore lasting peace and security in the conflict-ridden state.
