In a significant move towards enhancing water security and sustainability, the Delhi government has officially inked a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a comprehensive rainwater harvesting project. This ambitious initiative, part of the 'Catch the Rain' campaign, will initially target 75 CM Shri Schools across the capital. The signing ceremony, held at the Delhi Secretariat on Friday (July 10, 2026), saw Chief Minister Rekha Gupta alongside representatives from Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the Directorate of Education, and Ehsaas NGO, who are the key partners in this collaborative effort.
The project, spearheaded under IGL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, is set to undertake a multi-faceted approach to water conservation. It includes a thorough audit and subsequent restoration of existing rainwater harvesting infrastructure within the school campuses. Furthermore, new, state-of-the-art rooftop rainwater harvesting systems will be installed, significantly boosting the schools' capacity to collect and store water. Beyond infrastructure, the initiative also emphasizes education, with plans to organize dedicated water conservation and environmental awareness programs for both students and teachers, fostering a culture of responsible water usage from a young age.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her strong commitment to the project, highlighting that its scope will not be limited to just the initial 75 schools. She voiced an optimistic vision for expansion, hoping that this successful model would eventually be replicated and implemented across nearly 800 Delhi government schools. The ultimate goal, she stated, is to ensure that all government schools in Delhi are equipped with fully functional rainwater harvesting systems, thereby promoting groundwater conservation on a much larger, city-wide scale.
The Chief Minister lauded the project as a shining example of effective collaboration, demonstrating how government bodies, private industry, and social organizations can unite for a common, impactful cause. She underscored its dual benefits: not only will it fortify groundwater conservation efforts, but it will also play a crucial role in cultivating a deep sense of responsibility and sensitivity towards precious water resources among the younger generation, ensuring a sustainable future for Delhi.
