Zoo Addresses "Distressing" Crocodile Attack on 3-Year-Old Boy

A three-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after a terrifying crocodile attack at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, on June 18. The child, who reportedly entered the crocodile enclosure, was swiftly rescued by quick-thinking staff and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

In a recent statement, the family operating the zoo described the incident as "one of the most distressing incidents in our history." They lauded the "incredible speed and determination" of everyone on-site who rushed to help. The zoo acknowledged this has been an "incredibly difficult time" for all involved.

According to the zoo's social media post, "Within minutes of the first radio call, the child had been rescued from the enclosure and was receiving first aid." Emergency services, including the MAGPAS Air Ambulance, arrived promptly, and the zoo expressed immense gratitude for their professionalism, compassion, and dedication under such challenging circumstances. Visitors, including off-duty paramedics and police officers, also stepped forward to assist, with their "calm and immediate actions" making a significant difference.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident. He was later bailed after being "assessed as not being fit for interview," reportedly due to learning difficulties, having been been on a trip with carers. The investigation into the full circumstances surrounding how the boy came to be in the enclosure is ongoing.

Johnsons of Old Hurst expressed heartfelt thanks to both the public who helped and their own staff, stating, "We are immensely proud of our own staff, who responded without hesitation and did everything they could to help and support the child until the emergency services took over."
