In a significant move that has ignited a political firestorm, leaders from 24 Opposition parties, united under the INDIA bloc, have penned a joint letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Surya Kant. This unusual step, taken on June 28 and released to the media on July 3, 2026, details grave concerns over what they describe as threats to Indian democracy.
The letter, signed by prominent figures including independent MP Kapil Sibal, alleges widespread manipulation in recent elections held in Delhi, Haryana, and Maharashtra. The Opposition also points to partisan conduct by the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the perceived misuse of central investigative agencies against Opposition parties. Furthermore, they raised specific concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in West Bengal and Bihar.
According to the INDIA bloc, democratic institutions are under immense strain, and in many instances, electoral outcomes do not accurately reflect the will of the people. They claim to be approaching the judiciary as a last resort, believing that "when all else fails, people still repose their trust in the judiciary." Rahul Gandhi notably accused the ECI of abetting "vote theft" through its handling of the SIR of electoral rolls.
The Opposition's memorandum critically examines the ECI's conduct since 2014. They state that prior to 2014, questions regarding the integrity of Election Commissioners were rare. However, post-2014, they allege that almost every appointment made by the government has been of individuals closely associated with it, seemingly doing the government's bidding to manipulate election results. The letter highlights the perceived erosion of the Election Commission’s independence, referencing the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Anoop Baranwal case and criticising subsequent legislative changes that removed the Chief Justice of India from the appointment committee.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swiftly and strongly condemned the Opposition's actions. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi labeled the letter a "dangerous conspiracy" aimed at undermining Indian democracy and sowing anarchy by targeting its institutions. He accused the Congress, a key member of the INDIA bloc, of resorting to tactics reminiscent of the Emergency era. Trivedi suggested that this move stems from the Opposition's dwindling hopes of seizing power, particularly after failing to present factual arguments in court.
This escalating political debate underscores a deepening rift between the government and the Opposition over the integrity of India's democratic processes and institutions.
