A devastating accident in eastern Afghanistan has claimed the lives of at least 22 people, including many women and children, after a truck carrying returning refugees overturned on a major highway on Saturday, May 30, 2026. The tragic incident occurred in Laghman province, along the busy route connecting the capital city of Kabul with Nangarhar province.
According to provincial officials, the truck was transporting families who had recently returned from neighboring Pakistan. The vehicle veered off the road and fell into a deep ditch. Aminullah Sharif, the provincial director of public health, confirmed the death toll and noted that approximately 36 others were injured in the crash.
Local authorities reported that the driver likely fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the fatal plunge. Among those confirmed dead are at least ten children and five women. The injured survivors were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals in Nangarhar for emergency treatment.
This tragedy highlights the ongoing struggle for the millions of Afghans who have been forced to return home recently. Following a 2023 crackdown on undocumented migrants in Pakistan, and similar pressure from Iran, thousands of families have been making the journey back to Afghanistan, often in overcrowded and unsafe vehicles. Many of these refugees had spent decades living and working in Pakistan, and some were even born there.
In a separate but similarly tragic event in the eastern province of Nuristan on Friday night, May 29, a car fell off the road into a river. While the driver survived with injuries, four passengers remain missing, and rescue teams are currently searching the area.
Traffic accidents are unfortunately a frequent occurrence across Afghanistan. Experts point to a combination of poorly maintained infrastructure, lack of traffic regulation enforcement, and reckless driving as the primary causes of these recurring road disasters.
