The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has seen another escalation as Syria vehemently condemned recent Israeli strikes near its capital, Damascus. Officials reported that an attack in the village of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus, hit a civilian vehicle and left several people injured. This incident marks the second known Israeli strike on Syrian territory within a week, prompting Syria to label it a "violation" of its sovereignty and international law.
Israel, however, offered a different perspective. In a statement posted on X, the Israeli military asserted that it had targeted a "terrorist" who was in the "final stages" of preparing attacks, posing an immediate threat to its soldiers. This latest action follows an earlier strike on a military airbase near the Turkish border, specifically the Abu al-Duhur airbase, which had already raised alarms about escalating regional tensions.
The United States also weighed in, with Washington issuing a rare rebuke to Israel after the Abu al-Duhur strike. The US described the action as an "unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability." Adding to the controversy, US ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, suggested in an interview that the strike could be "the Israelis baiting the Turks" in an attempt to draw Turkey into a conflict, especially ahead of upcoming Israeli elections.
Israel"s far-right defense minister, Israel Katz, quickly dismissed Barrack"s comments as "full of inaccuracies." Katz clarified on X that Israeli forces were acting "in light of clear intelligence information about Turkey"s intentions." The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu further explained their position following the Tuesday strikes on the Abu al-Duhur airbase, stating that "Israel and Syria agreed to a status quo in security matters, which Syria was on the verge of breaching by permitting Turkish troops to deploy at an airbase near Aleppo."
While Turkey has not confirmed whether any of its troops moved to the Abu al-Duhur airbase, located approximately 70 kilometers from the Turkish border, the accusations highlight the delicate and volatile geopolitical landscape of the region. The repeated strikes and diplomatic spats underscore the deep-seated tensions and the potential for wider conflict.
