A tragic incident unfolded early Sunday morning in Mumbai's Goregaon East, where two young men, Prabhakar Dhanivar (24) and Bhavin Desai (18), reportedly suffocated to death due to a suspected chemical leak inside a public toilet. The grim discovery has prompted a comprehensive investigation into the exact nature and source of the deadly fumes.
Civic authorities received reports of the incident around 8:30 a.m., concerning a public toilet located near the Mrunaltai Gore Bridge in the Ram Mandir area.
Local residents told officials that the men had encountered a strong chemical smell, leading to their suffocation.
Both victims were rushed to Trauma Care Hospital, but were declared "brought dead" at 3:49 a.m. by doctors, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The exact composition and origin of the suspected chemical leak remain unknown as of Sunday morning. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), BMC ward staff, and an ambulance service were swiftly mobilized to the scene.
Authorities are meticulously examining the premises to identify what caused the powerful chemical odor and whether any hazardous substances or gases were present inside the facility. Further details regarding the circumstances under which Dhanivar and Desai entered the toilet, the duration of their presence inside, and the specific substance responsible for their suffocation are still awaited as the inquiry continues.
This incident highlights critical safety concerns in public infrastructure.
