New data shows women comprise nearly half of panchayat reps, with 10 states exceeding quota by up to five points ahead of Panchayati Raj Day.
Ahead of National Panchayati Raj Day, the Union government highlighted that women now make up over 49.7% of elected panchayat representatives. The data submitted to Parliament in 2025 shows that in 10 states and union territories, the quota percentage is exceeded, but by only up to 5 percentage points. Four states and union territories did not meet the quota, while five were just enough to hit the mandated share. While the Constitution guarantees 33% reservation for women in local bodies, 19 states and union territories have extended this to reserve 50% of seats for women in PRIs.
