In New Delhi, Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella outlined a bold vision for India’s AI future during a keynote that praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the country’s ability to lock in a virtuous cycle of policy, programs, technology stack and a thriving AI market. He stressed that India must retain control over its data, offering a spectrum of options from Public Cloud to Private Cloud and Sovereign Cloud, all under robust data governance and regulatory compliance with local storage. This framework, Nadella argued, will empower organizations to accelerate the real-world outcomes AI promises.
Microsoft announced a substantial commitment: $17.5 billion to be invested in India over the next four years to build AI infrastructure that can scale across the country, including facilities to support both consumers and enterprises. A centerpiece of the plan is skilling; Microsoft pledged to help train 20 million people in India for AI, with a focus on reaching smaller towns as part of a broader effort to democratize access to advanced technologies.
The tech giant acknowledged that its size can be a disadvantage in the race to create fast, effective AI solutions. To counter this, Nadella introduced a new “stack” framework designed to bend the curve on outcomes mattered to businesses and society, drawing a parallel to the PC era when computers began transforming workplaces and homes. The stack emphasizes the need for faster, more local, and governance-aligned AI services that can be customized to India’s regulatory and market realities.
Nadella’s remarks underscored a deeper push: enable Indian organizations to own and manage their data locally while still benefiting from Microsoft’s cloud and AI services, including the Microsoft 365 suite, for both consumer and enterprise use.
