Assam CM Defends Minister After Daughter Joins NEET Protest, Slams Trolling
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma addresses viral videos of a minister's daughter at a NEET protest, urging against trolling her father. Discover his stance on family vs. political ideologies!
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stepped in to address the buzz surrounding the participation of a minister's daughter in a recent NEET protest. Videos of Dibisa Mahanta, daughter of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta, shouting slogans at a 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP) protest in Guwahati on July 23, 2026, quickly went viral. Adding to the controversy, some slogans reportedly included slang directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The incident led to significant trolling targeting Minister Keshab Mahanta, a senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, Chief Minister Sarma strongly defended his cabinet colleague, stating that a parent should not be held accountable for the actions or political views of their adult children. “I don't think we should attack or troll Keshab Mahanta for the protest by his daughter. She may not follow her father's political ideology,” he emphasized.
Sarma elaborated on his perspective, explaining, “Tomorrow, when my son practises law, he may defend someone whom I may not like. The actions of children should not be linked with their parents once they become adults.” He also clarified his personal stance on the slogans raised by Dibisa, stating, “I do not agree with the slogans she raised. When I meet her, I will talk to her about it and try to make her understand that it was not the right thing to say.”
This incident highlights a nuanced discussion about individual freedom, family ties, and political responsibility, especially in the context of prominent public figures. The Chief Minister's remarks aim to de-escalate the situation and draw a clear line between personal beliefs and familial political affiliations, while also indicating his intention to counsel the young protester on the appropriateness of public discourse.
