Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been transferred from Adiala jail to the Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. This move comes after a Supreme Court order, responding to weeks of growing public concern and protests regarding Khan's deteriorating health. The transfer was made under tight security on Thursday.
The Supreme Court, acting on a plea from Khan's family and party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), issued an order for his immediate transfer to a private hospital for medical examination by specialist physicians. The government was given a 48-hour deadline to comply with this directive, initially appearing divided on the matter.
Zulfikar Bukhari, a spokesperson for Khan’s party, confirmed the transfer and emphasized that the court order also stipulated that family members should be allowed to meet with the former premier. Bukhari called for "independent medical oversight, access to qualified specialists, respect for family and legal rights, and complete transparency regarding his health" as the next crucial steps.
Reports have indicated Khan has been suffering from various health issues, including poor eyesight, with PTI officials previously stating he had only 15% eyesight. His family and party had been advocating for specialist medical care for months before taking the case to the Supreme Court. The area around Shifa International Hospital saw a significant increase in security personnel before Khan's arrival. This development marks a significant turn in the ongoing saga surrounding the former prime minister's detention.
