UK Travelers Warned: Arrive 3 Hours Early at EU Airports to Avoid Border Chaos

If you are planning a trip back to the UK from Europe, you might want to set your alarm a bit earlier. Airline bosses are now advising British passengers to arrive at airports three hours before their scheduled departure times. This comes as the new EU Entry-Exit System (EES) continues to cause significant delays at border checkpoints across the continent.

The EES, which has replaced traditional passport stamps with a digital registration process, involves biometric checks for non-EU citizens. While intended to modernize border security, the rollout has led to what some describe as potential summer holiday chaos. Wizz Air boss Yvonne Moynihan noted that while two hours used to be the standard recommendation, the current circumstances at many European hubs require a more cautious approach.

The impact of these new security procedures isn’t the same everywhere. While some travelers have experienced seamless transitions, major holiday hotspots in Spain, Portugal, and France have seen queues stretching up to three and a half hours during peak times. The European airports association, ACI Europe, has warned that the situation is deteriorating, even in airports that previously reported manageable wait times.

Travelers are being encouraged to prepare for the long wait. Experts suggest packing a portable charger and plenty of water, as queues can be unpredictable. If you have a connecting flight, it is also recommended to allow several hours between hops to ensure you don't miss your journey home due to a bottleneck at passport control.

While some airports, such as those in Mallorca, have managed to keep things moving with extra staff and a high number of registration kiosks, the general advice remains: give yourself plenty of time. For now, the era of the quick two-hour airport arrival seems to be on hold as Europe adjusts to its new digital border reality.
