Tense Showdown in Oslo: India Defends PM Modi’s Press Record

The diplomatic atmosphere in Oslo turned unexpectedly tense as India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) faced tough questioning over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision not to hold a traditional press conference. The incident occurred during PM Modi’s European tour, following a similar situation in the Netherlands, sparking a debate on media freedom and diplomatic protocol.

During a joint appearance with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, local journalist Helle Lyng Svendsen challenged the Indian leader, asking why he wasn't taking questions from what she described as the "freest press in the world." The confrontation continued even as the leaders moved on, with the journalist later accosting MEA officials during a secondary briefing.

MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George didn't hold back in his defense. Visibly passionate, George emphasized India's identity as a “civilizational country” and pointed out that while India holds one-sixth of the world’s population, it does not hold one-sixth of its problems. He highlighted the Indian Constitution's guarantees of fundamental rights and the nation's commitment to gender equality, urging critics to recognize India’s unique democratic journey.

The refusal to take questions drew criticism back home as well. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi weighed in, suggesting that the “world sees a compromised PM” who avoids direct media scrutiny. While the Norwegian Prime Minister eventually returned to speak with the press after seeing off PM Modi, the Indian delegation maintained that their protocols reflect India's established policy.

Despite the friction with the media, the tour has seen significant diplomatic progress. In the preceding visit to the Netherlands, India signed 17 MoUs focusing on crucial sectors like water management, renewable energy, and semiconductors, signaling a strengthening of ties across the continent.
