Highest voter-roll deletions in Murshidabad, Malda ahead of Bengal polls
New data shows where largest voter deletions occurred during adjudication in West Bengal, with Murshidabad and Malda at the forefront.
Across Bengal, about 27 lakh voters were removed from rolls during adjudication, a purge that has drawn heavy attention ahead of the elections.
In Murshidabad and Malda, the seats with the highest deletions were Samserganj (31.7%), Lalgola (23.2%), Raghunathpur (18.4%), Mothabari (18.3%), and Bhagabangola (17.4%). With the exception of Mothabari in Malda, all five are in Murshidabad district, underscoring how the revision process is reshaping local battlegrounds. The election results from the 2024 Lok Sabha polls show the TMC leading in two of these seats and Congress leading in three. The 2024 results overall show TMC leading in 190 of 294 Bengal seats, a pace similar to the 2021 assembly results when the party won 213 seats.
Separately, the seats with the lowest deletions from pre-adjudication to post-adjudication were Manbazar, Onda, Kashipur, Jhargram, and Chhatna, indicating a mixed picture across the state. In context, the full picture of delistings across Bengal included about 27 lakh voters being excluded under SIR, with the religious mix of deletions showing a notable share in Matua-border constituencies.
Locally, Murshidabad’s Shamsherganj and Lalgola were among the constituencies reporting the largest post-adjudication deletions—74,775 and 55,420 names respectively—part of a broader purge reported across Bengal as the second phase rolls prepare to begin and the court reviews potential challenges to the process.
