DMK rolls out a welfare-heavy manifesto with an ₹8,000 homemaker coupon for appliances and an extended breakfast scheme for Class 8 students, aiming for broad voter appeal from Chennai.
Chennai — In a star-studded launch of Tamil Nadu's political agenda, DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin unveiled a 'superstar' manifesto for the coming Assembly elections. The document blends welfare promises with a focus on Centre–State relations, promising an ₹8,000 coupon to homemakers who are non-Income Tax payers to buy any electronic home appliance from nearby stores, along with a broad expansion of the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme.
The Illatharasi scheme is billed as the election's heroine, and Stalin said the programme would allow homemakers to buy or replace appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, mixers, grinders, ovens, induction stoves, and television sets. He framed it as a practical boost for households and a symbol of the DMK's welfare orientation. He insisted the party would mobilise resources for the scheme's implementation, while keeping a lid on unnecessary expenses to protect Tamil Nadu's funds.
The manifesto also extends the Breakfast Scheme to students up to Class 8, a move the DMK frames as strengthening nutrition and education. On federalism, it reiterates support for the Justice Kurian Committee recommendations and seeks to secure Tamil Nadu's due share from the Centre, with promise to build on past growth and finance reforms under a plan to raise revenue through prudent financial management.
Earlier, the party released a list of 164 candidates for the polls, including more than 60 new faces, signaling a balance of veteran leadership and fresh entrants as the party targets its western region. Stalin called the manifesto a 'superstar' document, with Illatharasi as the 'heroine' of the campaign.
Analysts say the programme packs ambitious welfare with fiscal discipline, but they will watch for funding details and implementation readiness as the election fights intensify.
