The capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, came under a severe ballistic missile attack on Sunday, with Ukrainian Air Force officials confirming that Russian forces specifically targeted a drone exhibition. This latest assault adds to the tragic toll of the ongoing conflict, with at least 10 people reported killed in Kyiv and another five fatalities in the city of Sloviansk.
In a retaliatory move, Ukraine struck a Siberian oil refinery, with Kyiv asserting that these actions are aimed at crippling Moscow's war efforts. The conflict continues to escalate, as evidenced by a recent incident in Ukraine's Sumy region, where firefighters battled a blaze after a Russian strike on a petrol station. A separate drone attack in Sumy on Saturday tragically killed three drivers for the Nova Poshta courier service.
Amidst the fierce fighting, diplomatic efforts are also underway. Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin at a Russia-Kazakhstan forum in Omsk, advocated for a peace deal. Tokayev suggested that freezing the conflict and resuming negotiations could be the path to resolution, praising Putin's "utmost diplomatic flexibility." This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russia is preparing to bring an additional 30,000 North Korean troops into the war, though he did not offer evidence for this assertion.
The battlefield remains volatile, with other reports indicating that twelve people, including five children, were killed in an overnight drone attack on a holiday camp in a Russian-held part of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region. Russian-installed authorities accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians. Furthermore, Russia's defence ministry announced on Sunday that its forces had captured the settlement of Shevchenko in Ukraine's Donetsk region.
