Crowdfunder Tops £20k for Prof. Jason Arday's Family After Shocking Passing
A crowdfunding campaign launched by Sir Patrick Vernon has raised over £20,000 for the family of Professor Jason Arday following his sudden death amid plagiarism allegations. Support his loved ones.
More than £20,000 has been raised for the family of former Cambridge professor Jason Arday following his recent death, which occurred shortly after his resignation amid allegations of plagiarism. The fundraising drive, spearheaded by Windrush campaigner Sir Patrick Vernon, was launched on Saturday afternoon and has already garnered over 750 donations, exceeding its initial goal.
Professor Arday, a prominent figure in the sociology of education, resigned from his post last week. His death was confirmed after emergency services were called to an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday, where he was found unresponsive.
Sir Patrick Vernon, who had previously supported Professor Arday during the controversy surrounding the plagiarism claims, emphasized his concern for the family. In a tribute on the GoFundMe page, Sir Patrick described Arday as a "pioneering" academic and stated that the fund aims to help cover "funeral, memorial and associated family costs" and provide "practical support during an unimaginably difficult period." He highlighted his deep concern about the "nature and intensity of the attacks directed towards him" during the controversy.
In addition to the crowdfunding effort, the organisation Stand Up To Racism has announced plans for a vigil in Professor Arday's memory. The event is scheduled to take place on the steps of the National Gallery, offering another avenue for public remembrance and support.
