A private school teacher in Janakpuri, Delhi, has been arrested as police probe a 57-year-old caretaker accused of raping a three-year-old student, with officials reviewing school lapses.
A woman teacher at a private school in west Delhi’s Janakpuri has been arrested and remanded in one-day judicial custody in connection with rape of a three-year-old girl student by a 57-year-old caretaker, the police said on Thursday. The incident came to light after the girl's mother filed a complaint on May 1, following which an FIR was registered. While police are probing the teacher’s role in the case, the child’s family and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have alleged that she had taken the girl to the basement where the rape allegedly took place. AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj said the arrest was a step in the right direction as the girl had told her family about the teacher’s involvement. He also questioned the bail granted to the caretaker, saying he wielded power within the school. The government has warned that it could take over the school’s management if lapses are found in its functioning. Officials said they are conducting inspections.
Authorities said the case is being investigated from all angles, including how the private institution manages safety and whether staff supervision policies were followed. The city police have pledged a thorough probe while city officials stressed the need for transparency and child protection measures in schools.
