Sarkozy freed after three weeks in prison as appeal looms

France’s former president Nicolas Sarkozy has been released from prison after roughly three weeks behind bars, as he awaits the outcome of his appeal in a high-profile campaign-finance case tied to funds from Libya. He is the first ex-French leader to spend time in prison since World War II, a point highlighted by observers given his high-profile status and long post-presidency legal battles.

During his brief sentence, Sarkozy was held in the isolation wing of the prison, in a cell equipped with a toilet, a shower, a desk, a small electric hob and a small TV — all paid for by a monthly €14 fee. He had the right to receive information from outside and to receive family visits, and to communicate in writing and by phone, but he was effectively in solitary confinement. He was allowed one hour a day to exercise, alone in a segregated courtyard, with two bodyguards stationed in nearby cells, a measure cited by the interior minister as necessary due to a perceived threat.

Sarkozy has previously worn an electronic ankle tag after a separate conviction last December for attempting to bribe a magistrate for confidential information. He has long faced multiple investigations and convictions, and the current five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy in the 2007 campaign financing dispute has kept him in the public eye.

His lawyers have filed for early release, arguing for permission to serve the remainder of the sentence at home while the appeal proceeds. The court is expected to decide on that request, a decision that could again have political and legal ramifications in France. The case underscores ongoing tensions over how campaign financing is policed and the penalties for violations by even high-profile political figures.
