A rare Ebola strain with no vaccine is spreading in Congo and Uganda. With deaths rising, health experts warn that global pandemic preparedness is lagging behind.
The world is once again on high alert as a rare and deadly strain of Ebola, known as the Bundibugyo virus, continues to spread across the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Recent reports indicate that the death toll has now surpassed 130, with hundreds of more suspected cases emerging in the region. Unlike more common strains, this particular outbreak is proving exceptionally difficult to contain because there is currently no approved vaccine available to combat it.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm, warning that the numbers are likely to rise as healthcare workers struggle to manage the surge. So far, there have been approximately 600 suspected cases and 139 deaths linked to this severe viral haemorrhagic fever. The lack of a vaccine makes traditional containment methods, such as isolation and rigorous contact tracing, the only line of defense, placing an immense burden on local health systems.
In response to the growing crisis, countries like India are already reviewing their preparedness levels. The Centre is reportedly taking proactive steps to ensure that medical protocols and monitoring systems are in place, even as the outbreak remains concentrated in Africa. This move comes as pandemic experts, including Helen Clark from the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, point out that the global community's ability to respond to such threats is still lagging.
The situation in the DR Congo is particularly concerning due to the fatal nature of the Bundibugyo strain. Health officials are emphasizing the need for rapid international cooperation to prevent the virus from crossing more borders. As the world watches these developments, the focus remains on supporting affected regions and closing the gaps in our collective health security before another global crisis takes hold.
