Ghetts jailed for 12 years in fatal London hit-and-run

Rappers and actors often draw attention for their art, but Ghetts now faces a different kind of spotlight in court. The grime artist, real name Justin Clarke-Samuel, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the fatal hit-and-run that killed 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in London. The incident happened in October 2025 in Ilford, when Tamang was crossing the street.

Prosecutors said he was driving about 60 mph in a 30 mph zone, ran six red lights, veered across the median and onto the curb, and collided with a motorcyclist before striking Tamang. He then fled the scene in a BMW M5. Investigators later found a damaged rear-view mirror casing on the road and traced the serial number to his car. A blood alcohol content of 1.5 times the legal limit was detected at the time.

In December, Ghetts pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and causing death by dangerous driving. He expressed "extreme regret, shame and remorse" for Tamang’s death, saying, "This may be the only chance that I get to apologize. It was truly an unintentional act on my part and I am so sincerely sorry for the suffering and emotional distress that I have caused." The judge, Mark Lucraft KC, described the sequence as a "quite appalling litany of incidents" and said the behaviour was "simply shocking." He was also banned from driving for 17 years.

Beyond the courtroom, Ghetts has built a reputation as a grime pioneer, with roots in N.A.S.T.Y. Crew and The Movement, and collaborations with Damon Albarn’s Africa Express. He has acted in the 2018 film The Intent 2: The Come Up and appeared in five episodes of the 2024 Netflix series Supacell.

This sentence sends a clear message that dangerous driving and hit-and-run consequences are severe, regardless of fame. It adds to the ongoing conversation about accountability for public figures behind the wheel.
