Prime Minister Andy Burnham has arrived in Kyiv for his first foreign trip, unequivocally stating that Britain stands "100 per cent behind" Ukraine. The visit coincides with Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence, serving as a powerful signal of the UK's steadfast commitment amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
During his time in the Ukrainian capital, Mr. Burnham is set to chair the first meeting of a "coalition of the willing," reinforcing Britain's continued support. He aims to assure Ukrainians that the UK's backing will not waver, despite escalating threats from Moscow.
On Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian people should be in no doubt: the UK is behind you today and for as long as it takes,
he declared.
The Prime Minister emphasized the interconnectedness of both nations' security, stating, "Ukraine’s security is our security." He also touched upon the long-term vision for the relationship, asserting that "The friendship between our two countries will long outlast Russia’s illegal war." This includes promises of support during both the fight and the subsequent rebuilding efforts, aiming to create opportunities for people across both countries.
In a move set to further bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities, Mr. Burnham is expected to announce the sharing of classified information regarding components for long-range missiles, such as the Storm Shadow or Scalp. This would allow European defense firm MBDA to declassify crucial data, potentially enhancing Ukraine's operational capabilities significantly.
Such assistance comes amidst heightened tensions, with Russia's embassy to the UK previously accusing London of escalating the conflict and threatening "consequences" for its involvement.
However, Mr. Burnham remains resolute, reiterating that Russia's threats only strengthen British resolve.
He concluded with a clear message to Moscow: "Russia should be in no doubt of our resolve.
We will not back down until there is a just and lasting peace."
