Google updates Gemini on Android to autonomously handle multi-step tasks in select apps, turning your phone into a proactive AI agent.
Google has launched a new update to Gemini that automates multi-step tasks on Android phones. The chatbot will be able to handle multi-step tasks like ordering from food delivery apps or booking a ride by navigating third-party apps autonomously. Google is reportedly using a secure virtual window that transforms Android’s OS from a passive tool into a proactive AI agent.
The feature is being rolled out as an early preview and will arrive as a beta feature in the Gemini app for specific Android devices, including Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S26 series.
Initially, Gemini will support selected apps in categories such as food, grocery, and rideshare.
How it works? Gemini acts as a 'personal agent' on Android that triggers when you say something like 'Order my usual pepperoni pizza from DoorDash.' It will analyze your app, review your order history, and land you at the checkout to complete the task. You can monitor Gemini’s progress live via notifications, view updates, jump in, or stop the task.
The automation runs in a Secure Virtual Window, so it can only see and interact with the specific app required for the task, helping save time on repetitive chores. The rollout currently targets users in the United States and Korea, and Google notes it is joining the growing agentic AI race alongside rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI.
