Bhopal Tourist Killed as SUV Hits Car in Goa, Driver Arrested
A 65-year-old tourist from Bhopal dies after an SUV collides with his hatchback at a Goa junction; driver held for rash driving as investigations continue.
A 65-year-old tourist from Bhopal, Bhagatram Sharma, died after his hatchback was hit by a Mahindra Thar at a junction in Assagao, North Goa, on February 23. The vehicle struck Sharma’s car from the side, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. Two other occupants of the hatchback, including an infant, sustained minor injuries in the impact. The driver of the SUV, Shaurya Goyal, a Delhi resident, was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving as investigations began.
Authorities said the Thar was travelling from Mapusa toward Anjuna when the collision occurred, with Sharma’s car moving from Anjuna to Parra at the time of impact. There are ongoing inquiries into reports that the occupants of the SUV attempted to switch seats after the crash; CCTV footage from the road is being reviewed to determine who was actually at the wheel.
The incident has prompted calls for heightened road safety measures for visitors during Goa’s busy tourist season, as investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events and establish accountability.
