Debbie Adlam, the grieving mother of Pc Andrew Harper, has voiced her profound anger and frustration, requesting an urgent meeting with Andy Burnham. Her plea comes after Downing Street declared it "not possible" to exempt her son's killers, convicted of manslaughter, from the Government's controversial early release scheme. Ms. Adlam is seeking a direct explanation for this decision, feeling ignored and dismissed by official channels.
“My message is that you want to tour the country, you want to meet the people. You haven’t even got in touch with me. How about coming to see me?” Ms. Adlam told ITV News, directing her words towards Mr. Burnham. She highlighted the lack of official communication from the Government regarding the situation, stating, “Nobody has been in touch officially to tell me what the situation is. I’ve heard nothing from the Government.” This silence has only amplified her distress.
Ms. Adlam shared that she feels “more angry than ever” and “twisted inside” by the ongoing developments. She believes her son, Pc Harper, “deserves more than this.” She emphasizes that this isn't about a “special case” for just one or two individuals, but rather about holding accountable those who kill emergency service workers, a point she feels is being overlooked by the authorities.
Pc Andrew Harper was tragically killed in 2019 when he became entangled in a strap attached to a car and was dragged down a country road. This horrific incident occurred as his killers fled the scene of a quad bike theft in Sulhamstead, Berkshire. Despite the severity of the crime, his killers, Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers, remain eligible for release in January, having served half of their 13-year sentences for manslaughter. The early release scheme is expected to free approximately 5,000 individuals, a figure slightly reduced from an initial estimate of 6,000 after some exemptions were announced.
