Arson Charge: Man Faces Court Over Golders Green Memorial Fire

A man has been formally charged in connection with an alleged arson attack on a significant memorial wall located in Golders Green, north London. Ali Fallahi, 45, of Ilford, is accused of starting a fire at the site on Limes Avenue on April 27. The incident prompted a thorough investigation by counter-terrorism officers due to its sensitive nature and context.

Fallahi, who holds dual British and Iranian nationality, faces charges of arson and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday. The alleged attack targeted a memorial cabinet belonging to the Miga Rally community group. This cabinet was situated next to the memorial wall, which serves as a poignant tribute to two distinct groups of victims. A large section of the wall commemorates the thousands of protesters who lost their lives in a crackdown in Iran in January. Another part is dedicated to those killed in the devastating Hamas attack on the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023.

The fire, which was reported around 00:15 BST, was quickly spotted and extinguished, fortunately without spreading to the memorial wall itself. The swift response prevented more extensive damage to this important site of remembrance.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counter-terrorism policing London, emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, "This charge marks another step forward in one of the investigations into the series of arson attacks targeting the Jewish community and Iranian diaspora in London. We are determined to bring everyone involved in these incidents to justice." Following the incident, the Miga Rally community group released a statement expressing their distress.
