Verstappen Dominates Singapore GP with Pole & Sprint Win; Russell's Weekend Crumbles!
Max Verstappen snatches pole position and sprint victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, showcasing peak form! Meanwhile, George Russell's title hopes take a massive hit after a costly crash. Get the full F1 drama!
Max Verstappen continued his incredible run at the Singapore Grand Prix, securing pole position and clinching victory in the sprint race. The Dutchman was in sensational form, setting an unmatchable lap time of 1 minute 31.373 seconds in Q3 to beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by a mere five-hundredths of a second. This marks Verstappen's 50th pole position and his first ever in Singapore, building on recent successes in Malaysia.
His commanding performance underlines the significant improvements to his Red Bull car. While Verstappen celebrated a "Super Saturday," it was a nightmare for his title rival, Britain's George Russell. Russell's already slim championship hopes suffered a severe blow after he dramatically crashed out of the sprint race while leading on the Marina Bay circuit.
Starting from pole, Russell had overtaken Verstappen at the first corner, but a "silly mistake" on the final corner of the opening lap saw him put his wheels onto the white lines in wet conditions.
He lost control, spun into the barriers, and was out of the race.
Russell candidly admitted to a "miscalculation," explaining that unexpected battery deployment pushed him wider than intended.
This crash had significant repercussions, forcing his team to work frantically to repair the car before qualifying. Although he qualified sixth, Russell will start Sunday's main race from the back of the grid due to penalties for taking a new engine this weekend. This reliability issue, stemming from a previous engine failure in Malaysia, further compounded his woes.
The incident played directly into the hands of Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, who qualified a respectable fourth despite struggling with his car earlier in the weekend. Antonelli's lead over Russell now stands at 89 points. If he extends that lead to 101 points in Singapore, he could seal his first championship at the next round in Austin.
The sprint race itself, delayed by heavy rain, was a largely processional affair after Russell's exit.
Verstappen inherited the lead and controlled the race comfortably, fending off Lewis Hamilton, who had made a superb start to jump from sixth to third. Hamilton eventually finished third in qualifying, with Lando Norris taking fifth for McLaren.
Verstappen now looks set to challenge for his first ever Grand Prix victory at Singapore, one of only two tracks on the current calendar where he is yet to win. #SingaporeGP #MaxVerstappen #GeorgeRussellDrama
