Future Financial Boost for Kids? Ireland Considers Child Investment Accounts!
Ireland's new state-backed investment scheme for adults might soon expand to children! Learn how this plan aims to shift €170bn from idle savings into market investments. #IrishFinance
Ireland is buzzing with financial news as plans emerge for a potential future where even children could have their own state-backed investment accounts. This exciting development follows hot on the heels of a new savings and investment scheme set to roll out for adults aged 18 and over, aiming to revolutionise how Irish households manage their money.
The primary goal of this tax-advantaged scheme, spearheaded by Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris, is to encourage people to move their substantial savings from traditional bank deposits into more dynamic market investments. Mr. Harris has previously highlighted that an astonishing 170 billion euro is currently "sitting idle" in Irish bank accounts, representing a massive untapped resource.
This initiative seeks to unlock that potential and foster greater financial engagement among the populace.
Currently, Irish households hold a mere 2.3% of their financial assets in direct investments like listed shares and debt securities.
This figure pales in comparison to the EU average of approximately 7.5%, indicating a significant gap in investment culture.
Instead, a considerable 38% of Irish household financial assets are held in cash and deposits, which is notably higher than the EU average of 30%.
The new scheme for over-18s is designed to address this imbalance by making market investments more accessible and appealing.
While the immediate focus is on the adult scheme, the Department of Finance has confirmed that the concept of a dedicated investment account for children has garnered considerable interest.
"This concept will be given consideration as part of future finance Bills," the plan states, indicating a phased approach.
The idea is to first allow providers to familiarise themselves with the operation of the adult accounts and develop the necessary IT infrastructure before potentially expanding the scheme's availability to younger generations. This forward-thinking approach could lay the groundwork for a more financially savvy future for Irish youth.
