Sarma: BJP Filed 5 Lakh Complaints to Delete Foreigners From Assam Rolls
Assam CM says BJP workers submitted over 500,000 complaints to remove suspected illegal foreigners from electoral rolls during the SR process.
Assam chief minister said BJP workers filed over 500,000 complaints with the Election Commission during the ongoing special revision to delete the names of suspected foreigners from the electoral rolls. "Our stand against illegal foreigners is very clear. That’s why our workers have filed more than 500,000 complaints during the SR process seeking deletion of names of suspected illegal foreigners," he stated at an event in Demow, Sibasagar district, adding that no place in Assam is safe from illegal foreigners.
The remarks come as the state gears up for assembly polls expected in March-April, with the CM aiming to project a hard line against illegal migration and infiltrators. He also touched on his criticism of Bengali-speaking Muslims, referred to by some as ‘Miyas’, noting concerns about their presence in various parts of the state.
Sarma cited recent evictions of suspected foreigners from government lands in Golaghat and Sarupathar, and he said records from land sale and purchase in Tinsukia show unknown people buying land while Hindus are selling plots. He warned that areas of Upper Assam, which were considered safer five years ago, are now seen as more vulnerable to illegal settlement.
The comments reflect the ongoing political battle over immigration and citizenship, a central issue in Assam’s electoral discourse and policy shifts around the SR process.
