Virtual Directors Take the Runway: AI's New Role in High Fashion
AI is no longer just a buzzword in fashion. Industry pioneers like Nick Knight and H&M are using it to create groundbreaking, interactive showcases that redefine creativity and connection.
Fashion is embracing artificial intelligence, and it's doing so in ways that are both innovative and, at times, controversial. Forget simply editing photos - we're talking about AI-powered experiences that redefine the runway. This shift towards 'virtual directors' and digital showcases is ushering in a new era for how we consume and interact with high fashion.
Take H&M's recent Fall/Winter 2027 show, 'H&M&YOU&I,' at London Fashion Week.
It was a masterclass in this evolving landscape.
H&M collaborated with the visionary photographer Nick Knight and his ShowStudio to create a one-of-a-kind, interactive experience.
What did it entail? AI transforming still photography and illustrations into real-time fashion films, which models and even guests could influence just by moving in front of them. It was a living, breathing digital canvas.
Jörgen Andersson, H&M’s global creative director, perfectly captured the essence: 'Fashion imagery can feel distant, and this project is about human connections and relationships in a digital age.' This collaboration serves as a potent reflection of how we all navigate between our physical and digital lives daily, offering a vision for fashion that is 'artistic, experimental, painterly and beautiful.'
Nick Knight has long been a proponent of experimenting with emerging image-making technologies. His ShowStudio has a rich history of pushing boundaries, making him an outspoken advocate for artists to engage with AI rather than resist it. For H&M, while they've faced scrutiny for past AI experiments, like their 2025 plans for AI 'digital twins' of models, this project frames AI as a tool to extend human creativity, not replace it.
The process started with original images shot by Knight of model Alex Consani and actor Archie Renaux, plus illustrations by Cliff Warner, before AI transformed them into dynamic moving imagery.
There's no doubt that AI sparks vital conversations around copyright, creative authorship, and the future of traditional roles in fashion.
However, pioneers like Knight and H&M are demonstrating that this technology, when wielded thoughtfully, can democratize fashion and foster a deeper sense of involvement.
As Knight states, 'I believe that for fashion to be relevant, it needs to constantly change and push creative boundaries, and I'm excited that H&M shares that vision.' This isn't just about pretty pictures; it's about asking questions and inspiring new ways of seeing the world, ensuring fashion remains vibrant and connected in a rapidly digitizing reality.
