Haryana Tensions: Police-Protester Clashes Erupt on Independence Day
Independence Day in Haryana marred by clashes between police and protesting farmers/khap organizations demanding justice for slain dairy operator Jeevan Kundu. Learn more about the unrest.
Independence Day celebrations in Haryana were overshadowed by significant unrest as clashes erupted between police and protesters, primarily farmers' unions and khap organizations. The demonstrations were triggered by deep-seated anger following the recent killing of dairy operator Jeevan Kundu.
The protests had been announced earlier by farmers' unions and khap panchayats, who intended to demonstrate at Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's Independence Day programme in Hansi. This protest call led to the closure of the Khatakhat toll plaza on Saturday, adding to the disruption across the region.
At the heart of the unrest is the murder of Jeevan Kundu, a dairy operator from Surya Nagar, who was allegedly attacked by a group of men with sticks on August 4 and later succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The incident has ignited widespread outrage, with farmers and khap organizations raising serious questions about law and order in the state and demanding swift, decisive action against all those involved in the killing.
BJP MLA Devender Chaturbhuj Attri addressed the situation, condemning the murder and extending his condolences to Kundu's family. He also cautioned against the spread of misleading information on social media. Attri emphasized, "First of all, I strongly condemn this heinous murder that has taken place, and I express my condolences to the victim's family." He added, "I want to tell social media influencers that the misleading propaganda being spread is completely false and baseless. A criminal is a criminal; it has nothing to do with his family, village, or relatives." His remarks came amidst ongoing public debate and heightened tensions surrounding the case, as he stressed that individual criminal actions should not be attributed to their broader community.
The situation remains tense as authorities manage the aftermath of the clashes and protesters continue to demand justice for Jeevan Kundu, highlighting the fragile state of peace on a day meant for national celebration.
