20 Dead in Kakinada Firecracker Plant Blast; CM, PM Announce Ex-Gratia

An explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Vetlapalem, Samarlakota mandal, Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh, has claimed 20 lives and left many others critically injured. Fire and rescue teams rushed to the scene as investigators began securing the area and rescuers searched through scattered debris.

Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh said he was "deeply shocked" by the tragedy and reaffirmed that the coalition government would stand by the families of the deceased and ensure the best possible medical treatment for those injured. "I am deeply shocked to hear about the explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Vetlapalem, Samarlakota mandal, Kakinada district. The loss of many lives is an indescribable tragedy. I pay my respects to the deceased. The coalition government will support the families of the deceased. We will provide better medical treatment to the injured," he wrote on X.

Authorities announced ex-gratia payments from the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister to the families of the deceased and to those injured, as officials pledged swift medical care and ongoing support.

Rescue teams were coordinating with local authorities, and investigators said the cause was under inquiry as authorities sought to determine what went wrong at the hazardous fireworks facility and to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Residents and officials emphasized the immediate need for stricter safety protocols and better emergency response in the fireworks industry, which remains a hazardous but economically significant part of the region.
