Deadly Philippine Quake Lifts Seabed 2m, Endangers Marine Life!
A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the southern Philippines has dramatically reshaped coastlines, raising the seabed by two metres and leaving dozens missing. Discover the devastating environmental impact.
A catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mindanao island in the Philippines this week, claiming at least 61 lives and leaving 40 people missing. The powerful tremor, which occurred on June 8, 2026, has had an unprecedented geological impact, raising the seabed by as much as two metres (6.6 feet) in some areas, according to reports from the environment department. This dramatic phenomenon, known as "coastal uplift," has also extended shorelines by up to 200 metres in certain locations.
Local residents first reported these startling changes two days after the quake. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed that a shifting of the Cotabato Trench, a site of frequent seismic activity, "pushed part of the coastlines of Sarangani and Davao Occidental [Provinces], exposing the bottom of the sea that was originally submerged." The mapped uplift was approximately two metres.
The environmental consequences are severe. A team dispatched to the affected areas found extensive stretches of shoreline, coral reefs, and seagrass beds now exposed to the air. Images released by the department's regional office vividly show large swaths of exposed coral littered with dead fish and other aquatic life. These exposed ecosystems, including reef fishes, eels, clams, and shells, have begun dying off, raising concerns among residents about potential fumes from decaying sea life.
The full extent of the affected area is still being surveyed, as officials note the vast size of the region. This earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the volatile seismic activity in the Cotabato Trench, which lies just 50 kilometres off the coast of southern Mindanao and has previously experienced intense seismic swarms.
