IndiGo names IATA chief William Walsh as new CEO
IndiGo appoints William Walsh, former British Airways CEO and current IATA head, as its new chief executive, aiming to steady operations after recent disruptions.
In a move aimed at stabilising the airline after a period of disruption, IndiGo’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation Limited on Tuesday announced the appointment of William Walsh as chief executive officer, subject to regulatory approvals.
Walsh, who is currently Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), is expected to complete his IATA tenure on July 31, 2026 and to take charge of IndiGo by August 3, 2026.
The new CEO brings extensive global airline experience, having previously served as CEO of British Airways and of International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns airlines including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling.
The appointment comes in the wake of Pieter Elbers’ resignation, following a period of large-scale flight cancellations at IndiGo during November and December 2025 that led to the disruption of more than 5,000 flights.
Industry observers expect Walsh to leverage his broad network and leadership track record to push for stronger reliability, tighter schedule discipline and a clearer growth strategy across IndiGo’s domestic and international network.
The move, however, will take effect only after required regulatory approvals are obtained, and Walsh is slated to assume the CEO role once all clearances are in place.
